Curriculum Committee Minutes
Proposals, Discussion, and Actions
Meeting of October 20, 2006
Cornish Hall, Room D218
11:00 p.m.
Present: Pamela Summers, Joseph Rayle, Emilie Kudela
Absent: Marley Barduhn
NOTE: Pam was detained and arrived to the meeting late. As there was a quorum, the meeting proceeded on time. Pam wanted to go through the proposals. In essence of time, she indicated that she would do this on her own time and address any concerns to Emilie via e-mail.
FSA 550 As a graduate level course, Emilie questions the rigor of the course. It looks more like a tour. It was suggested that there be an inclusion of the standards for the course, the portfolio needs a rubric and the Attendance Policy needs to be further defined. The critique of the Resource Guide is not part of student performance.
Action: Contingent Pass Make recommended changes.
EDU 315 Recommended changes have been made. Suggested adding page numbers for consistency.
Action: Passed
EDU 379 This is similar to ECE 270 except that this has 50 hours of practicum. Proposal looks good as is.
Action: Passed
EDU 478 This is next in sequence to EDU 378. It takes the place of the Social Studies methods course and focuses on the upper level grades. The standards have been added and updated.
Action: Passed
EDU 479 This is the follow-up to EDU 379. This is also where the other 50 hours are in the curriculum. We give field work in both blocks of Childhood.
Action: Passed
ECE 334 This has been proposed for two credit hours in order to match the Childhood Program. This will be in alignment with transfer credits and articulation agreements. Joseph asked about the use of videos and questioned whether or not they were outdated. Emilie agreed that the video series is a bit dated, but it is still useful. They combine this with using some newer things as well.
Action: Passed
INT 303 Joseph suggested the use of a resource bibliography in order to identify the required from the recommended readings and to differentiate the book list. He also asked if this was cleared with the Art Department. Emilie explained that they do know about it. This course helps to address all of the arts. Early Childhood has a curriculum course written in where Childhood does not. The GE requirement is usually music. Joseph asked if there was cognizant work beyond Piaget? Emilie said that there are other arts that could be included. They are in the books.
Action: Contingent Pass Include the resource bibliography as mentioned in the discussion.
Childhood Early Childhood Education Program Will be addressed at the next meeting.
Next Meeting: November 3, 2006, 11:00 am, Cornish Hall, D218.
